Where do you work?
I am working for Joe Fresh. It's a Canadian fashion company. In September of 2011, Joe Fresh will open its flagship shop on 5th Avenue.
What is your role?
I am a Junior Graphic Designer. I assist in creating store signage, e-newsletters and seasonal brochures. It's a fairly small team, so I can plan my ideas without too much restriction.
What do you love about being a graphic designer?
There is no one, particular, "right" answer for a brief. I can respond to a brief in many different ways.
When did you graduate from Shillington?
April of 2011
What were you doing before the course?
I was an assistant buyer for a small jewelry company in New York.
Did you have any design experience before studying at Shillington?
Sometimes I designed display cards for jewelry that my former company, but those designs weren't based on the correct fundamentals.
Why did you decide on Shillngton?
I was searching for a school that would teach the skills and knowledge required for an immediate hire in the workplace. Shillington's three month intensive course was perfect. I couldn't think of a better place to fulfill my needs.
What was the most valuable thing you took away from your time here?
Attention to detail. The teacher's at Shillington stressed the importance of attention to detail so often. Ultimately it was that attention that helped to create my very professional portfolio. The course also prepared me thoroughly for the realities of the design world.
How did you find the environment, facilities and teaching?
Great! It's a very comfortable place. The teaching staff answered all my questions and gave straight forward critiques, yet they were patient too.
How confident did you feel about entering the design industry after you graduated?
I feel good about what I've done. Interviewers were impressed with it, and that has boosted my confidence.
How long did it take you to secure a job?
Two weeks after graduation. It was my first interview.
What was the response like to your portfolio during interviews?
They were surprised by the wide range of briefs and the quality of my portofolio. They were absolutely impressed by it.
What's been the highlight of your design career so far?
Finishing signage that is going to be on the 300+ stores in Canada.
Where do you see yourself a year from now?
I will hopefully get recognized for my projects.
Any advice for someone considering whether to take the leap ito graphic design?
If you think you have the heart for it, and you can't stop looking and admiring the work of great designers, do it right now. It'll be the best decision you could ever make. It was for me.
