Where do you Work?
I have just finished an internship at Acclaim Magazine. And I'm now looking to work in a studio.
Describe your typical day as a designer?
As an intern I would work on something new everyday. From magazine page layouts, press releases, web management to even wine labels.
What do you love about being a designer?
I love the fact any piece of work you do is kind of a journey. From concept to iteration then to final design. Then seeing your work in its final form is incredibly rewarding.
When did you graduate from Shillington?
2010.
What area were you working in before the course?
I studied Sport and Recreation at Swinburne.
Did you have any design experience before the course?
I had no formal experience but I have always had an eye for design growing up; whether it be photography, print, film or music.
Why did you decide to do the course?
After finishing my course at Swinburne I had no love for Sports and Recreation. I found it dry and boring.
Having always had a passion for design I thought 'why not' and haven't looked back since.
What was the most valuable thing you took away from Shillington?
Finding out that ideas don't just appear out of nothing. Ideas are created from tons of research, iteration, hard work and, of course, inspiration from pretty much everything. And also to sweat the details no matter what you are working on.
How did you find the school environment, facilities and teaching?
The college environment was all I could ask for in terms of learning. With two teachers for a small class you always had a teacher ready to help or answer questions. I found that other students where more than happy to lend a hand if I got stuck which really helped to create an awesome environment to be in.
How confident did you feel about entering the design industry after you graduated?
After graduating I felt that my portfolio was exactly what I needed to get my foot in the industry. Combined with my knowledge of the Adobe Suite I felt as though I could do pretty much anything asked of me.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
To be honest just being able to say I have worked at a magazine is a highlight in of itself. Of course the benefits that come with working at a magazine such as getting a bunch of free clothes and swag, attending events and exhibitions across Melbourne and meeting new people both locally and internationally didn't hurt.
Where do you see yourself 12 months from now?
I would like to be working full-time in a studio creating awesome work.
Any advice for someone pondering whether to take the leap into graphic design and sign up for the course?
Even if you have a little interest in design, Shillington is the best place to find out if it's for you. Before I started the course I was little unsure if design was really for me but after finishing the very first class I knew I had made the right choice and have been hooked ever since.
