Where do you work?
InStyle magazine as a junior graphic designer working in the advertising/creative services department
Did you feel confident about entering the world of work after you graduated?
ABSOLUTELY! I created an amazing portfolio at Shillington, and most importantly I had confidence in myself and my work! Even without previous experience in the design world, I knew my work spoke for itself. All I needed was a chance to prove I could do the job better than any other candidate they were interviewing (who may have had a few years experience) I was determined! I spent the next 3 weeks after our program ended sending out my resume and portfolio to everyone and anyone!
What were you doing before the course?
Trying to break into the fashion industry. I studied fashion merchandising in undergrad, and spent a year freelancing and doing odd jobs here and there, but I hadn't found my "dream job" I wasn't getting the fulfillment out of these jobs that I needed.
Why did you decide to do the course?
I needed a job that involved more creativity. I have always been interested in graphic design, I had just never pursued it. Finally, I decided it was time for a change. I wasn't happy with the direction my "career" was going in and this was a perfect time and opportunity to change that!
What was the most valuable thing you took away from the course?
The tools and skills needed to jump straight into the design industry! I am just as qualified as anyone who studied graphic design in an undergrad program, if not more. I also learned how to interview properly. The Shillington Lecturers intensely helped us prepare for life after school! We went over what to do and what not to do during an interview. They insisted on making sure we knew every font that was used in every piece in our portfolios and knew all the background on the briefs. I was surprised to actually have someone ask me what font I used on an interview, but thanks to the lecturers I knew the answer!
Where do you see yourself 12 months from now?
Working in a graphic design position in the fashion industry.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Landing my dream job!
